How to have a socially distanced 420
How do you celebrate 420 during the coronavirus pandemic?
Virtually, of course.
Most of us are at least a month into self-quarantine, and it's obvious that social distancing is the most effective way to curb the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.
Perhaps you've been celebrating the stoner holiday since your state's shelter-in-place mandate started — after all, this entire month is technically 420. Or perhaps, like me, you've lost all sense of time and forgot about it completely. If you're inside with nothing better to do (and if you're in a state where this is legal) then why not celebrate marijuana legalization quarantine-style?
Here are 9 ways to celebrate 420, all while doing your part to flatten the curve.
1. Video call friends

Whether over Zoom, Discord, FaceTime, Google Hangouts, or any video calling platform of your choice, you can still be social on this blessed day. You can even change your background to a fun, themed one. Better yet, try out Jitsi Meet, a free and open-source video-chat tool that is encrypted and won't share your data.
2. Play a group game

OK, maybe you're not down to make awkward high small talk with your friends. Luckily, we live in an age where most people have access to the internet. Visit a friend's Animal Crossingisland! Play a few rounds of QuipLash! Platforms like Jackbox allow multiple people to play from different places, as long as they have smartphones. If you're feeling adventurous and particularly dextrous, you could try playing Spaceteam, a collaborative game in which each player controls a part of a spaceship. And if you're missing your weekly bar trivia, you can get your team together for some livestream trivia.
3. Watch a movie together

Who needs to Netflix and chill when you can Netflix and Zoom? By using extensions like Netflix Party, you and your fellow stoners can watch movies and TV shows in sync with each other.
4. Go for a walk
High walks are underrated.Credit: Getty ImagesGoing outdoors is lovely, whether you're high and social distancing or sober and living in a timeline where most of the country isn't ordered to stay at home. If you're self-quarantined, it'll probably do you some good to take a nice socially distanced walk anyway! Get baked, cover your mouth and nose, and get some fresh air — all while staying at least six feet away from other people, of course.
5. Get involved in marijuana reform

Consider researching your local representatives' stance on marijuana legalization, donating to a reform nonprofit, or signing up to volunteer with a grassroots organization. There are plenty of ways to get involved in marijuana reform, and 420 is the perfect time to start.
6. Recreate art

After lighting up, try participating in the Getty Challenge. When California’s shelter-in-place mandate began last month, the Getty Museum in Los Angeles encouraged Twitter users to appreciate art by trying to recreate it using household objects, which resulted in some creative (and hilarious) attempts. Now imagine trying to recreate masterpieces like “The Birth of Venus” or “The Last Supper” while baked.
7. Play Chopped, quarantine edition
Sometimes you need to quell your munchies with something deep fried.Credit: Getty ImagesIt’s happened to all of us before: you take a hit and suddenly you’re hit with an overwhelming need for something deep fried and covered in cheese. Try playing a round of Chopped, but quarantine style. What masterpieces can you make from frozen pizza rolls, a can of beans, and half a bag of shredded cheese?
8. Watch an animal livestream
Zone out and watch a variety of zoo livestreams to celebrate weed this year. From kitten cams to panda cams to sea otter cams, animal sanctuaries all over the United States are making up for zoo closures by livestreaming their inhabitants. And if high-watching a baby otter snuggle up against its mother doesn't make you sob uncontrollably, you're a monster.
9. Tip your weed delivery driver extra
TIP! YOUR! DELIVERY! DRIVERS!Credit: Getty ImagesIn states like California, where dispensaries are still open because they’re considered “essential” businesses, service workers are putting their lives at risk to make a living. If you’re buying from a weed delivery service, I cannot stress this enough: TIP YOUR DAMN DELIVERY DRIVERS. And tip them well— they deserve it!
Social distancing doesn't mean you can't partake in 420 — it just means you may have to celebrate differently this year. And no matter how good the vibes are, please do notshare joints with strangers.
