Report: Blizzard working on 'Warcraft' meets 'Pokémon Go' game
Pokémon Goto the pollsWorld of Warcraft?
According to a report from Kotaku, Blizzard is currently quietly developing a new Warcraft spinoff based on the hit mobile game, Pokémon Go.
The report claims that many people at Blizzard, the popular game developer responsible for World of Warcraft, Starcraft, and Diablo, are big fans of Pokémon Go. Most importantly, World of Warcraftlead designer Cory Stockton is a huge Pokémon fan, which, according to developers, helped push the idea into production.
The new mobile game is currently being developed by a Blizzard “incubation team” for multiple smartphone platforms.
While the Warcraft mobile game was sparked by Pokémon Go, we’re not exactly going to see Pikachu popping up in Azeroth. Those who spoke to Kotaku for the report claim the game is far enough into production that they've actually played it. They say there’s “a lot more to it than Pokémon Go, including single-player mechanics.”
Not much else is known about this secret Warcraft project at this time. The news was leaked in a report about the upcoming Warcraft mobile game project Diablo Immortal. That game has received some backlash after it was announced at Blizzard’s annual gaming convention, Blizzcon, last month.
Many Diablo fans reacted negatively to the popular franchise being adapted for mobile. Many Pokémon games, however, have traditionally been mobile-first, so the new, Warcraft-themed take on Pokémon Goseems like a more natural fit. We await leaked screenshots with baited breath.
